Passing the torch with Tutor Claire (Issue #10)
6 years ago, I received a call from a new-to-me student. He was calling from Times Square NYC at midnight on New Year's Eve. He was from KSA and could barely speak broken English. At the time, I thought, "What a crazy person, calling from there, especially at that time!". He had recently arrived in the U.S. to study for his Master of Law degree.
We have worked together ever since and have become good friends. He completed his Masters degree then went on to study for JSD and JD degrees - a huge undertaking. Writing his dissertation was a big challenge but he accepted the challenge and succeeded.
On Monday, he graduated having earned both of these degrees - the only one in the Class of 2024 at his University to do so. I am in New Zealand, so I got up at 3am in order to see the live stream of the ceremony. To hear his name called out, to see him walk across that stage to accept his degrees - I could not have been prouder if it had been one of my own family. A few tears were shed here I must tell you.
