How much and when does Cambly pay?
Cambly pays $0.17 USD per minute chatted ($10.20/hour), processing your earnings every Tuesday (by end of business day PST). As of September 2022, the pay period will end at EOD Mondays UTC (23:59:59), so tutors will be paid for the previous full 7 days. Pay processed on Tuesday will be for the previous week’s Tuesday 00:00:00 UTC through Monday 23:59:59 UTC. As of January 17th, 2023, Tutors will be paid for all minutes of lessons started during this pay period UTC.
Cambly now offers tutors different options for how often they would like to be paid! We know that tutors are located in all different areas of the world and may have to deal with transfer and/or FX fees, which is why we like to offer more flexibility.
Tutors can choose to be paid every 1 week, every 2 weeks, or every 4 weeks, regardless of your payment method selection.
Cambly only pays out balances with a net total of $20, which means that after processing fees are deducted, your payment must be over $20. If you have less than a $20 net balance in your account when payments are processed, it will remain there until your accrued payments meet this threshold.
Note (*UPDATE* January 17th, 2023): Minutes of calls will no longer be split between pay periods. If a call extends into a new pay period (ie. past pay period cutoff time: Mondays at 23:59:59 UTC) the lesson will now be paid in full in the pay period it starts in. For example: A lesson starts at 23:30:00 UTC on Monday 9th and ends at 00:30:00 UTC on Tuesday 10th. The whole 60 mins will be paid in full, in the pay period in which the call began (in this case the pay period is 3rd - 9th). It will no longer be split as 30 minutes paid out in two separate pay periods. |

You can check your "Account Balance" to see your current balance. If we make any adjustments to your past week's chat minutes, then these changes will be reflected in the following pay cycle.
We deliver your earnings to the payment method account you have on file. You can check or change your payment method (and frequency!) on the Account page here.
Common pay issues & PayPal - Why did I not receive my pay?
We know it can be frustrating when you do not receive your pay on time. It's our number one priority to make sure all tutors receive compensation for all their hard work on Cambly. Here are the most common reasons tutors do not receive their tutor payment on time.
1) Incorrect Email Address
The most common reason is a simple spelling mistake. Before you write into Tutor Support please check your PayPal email address on the Account page here. If you find any typos or errors please correct these mistakes. Next, write into Tutor Support and let them know there was an error in your PayPal email. It's super helpful if you give us the incorrect email so we can find and reverse the payment.
2) PayPal Payment Blocks
There are many reasons why your payment might not process. Often times, the reason is not because of Cambly but PayPal. Please read the list of the most common PayPal issues that would prevent you from receiving your tutor payment. https://developer.paypal.com/docs/classic/admin/setup-account/#block-certain-kinds-of-payments
3) Unclaimed Payments
Often times tutor payments will go unclaimed in PayPal. Be sure you have set up and verify your PayPal account in order to receive your tutor payments on time. Here's more information about unclaimed payments. It's important to note that all unclaimed payments will be returned to Cambly after 30 days. https://www.paypal.com/fm/smarthelp/article/what-does-a-status-of-unclaimed-mean-faq2038
4) Extended Break from Cambly
We all need breaks but after an extended absence from tutoring on Cambly our system might not recognize returning tutors and fail to issue their tutor payment on time. We are happy to correct this error! Please write into our friendly Tutor Support Team let them know that you had an extended break and have not received payment. We will send the payment immediately. All proceeding payments will be issued on time.
5) PayPal Does not Work in Certain Countries
If PayPal is not an option in your country, you also have the option of receiving pay through Tipalti. If you would like to get started with Tipalti, please follow the steps below:
- Login to your account and go to your account settings.
- Click on Account and scroll down until you see the Payments section.
- Click the Edit button to change your payment method.
- In the Platform dropdown menu, you should see Other Payment Methods as a new option.
- Once selected, you'll be asked to input your information. Once finished, click the Done button below the confirmation message to save.
For more information about Tipalti, please follow this link to learn more.
Note: There are also some countries that do not have any payment options available through Tipalti at the moment. If you are located in one of these countries, please be patient as we are working really hard to provide further options in the future and tutors will be kept updated as this happens. | ![]() |

What do I do about filing taxes and reporting income?
If you have had "PayPal" selected on your tutor account page, in compliance with IRS regulations regarding companies who pay via a third party network (like PayPal), Cambly will not be issuing you a Form 1099-K nor report your income to the IRS. As we pay tutors via PayPal, PayPal may or may not send you a Form 1099-K depending on how much you earned.
For your convenience, we total your last year's payments on the "Account" section of your tutor dashboard: https://www.cambly.com/en/tutor/profile#account
If you have "Other Payment Methods" selected, Cambly is working on the best solution to ensure tutors will receive the relevant tax documents in a timely manner ahead of the next tax season.
If you have any doubts or questions, we recommend you seek professional accounting advice based on the country in which you live and/or to which you report your earnings.
As a reminder, you're responsible for reporting your Cambly earnings to the applicable agencies.
