You’ve impressed a student by giving them a clear vision of their English journey with a learning plan and great advice for self-study drawing from your knowledge, skills and expertise. Now they are your regular and it should be smooth sailing from here, right?
Sometimes even after a great Kickoff conversation with a student, tutors can find it difficult to maintain the same energy and focus as the relationship develops and may even find that they suddenly lose students.
As a Pro tutor, it is important to occasionally reflect on whether you are providing the elevated support that Pro students expect and to check in regularly with them to see if their expectations are still met.
As you reflect, here are some questions that you could consider asking yourself:
- Am I maintaining the structured focus that makes Cambly Pro unique, even as I get more comfortable with the student?
- Am I still prioritizing student talktime while staying mindful not to overshare my own stories and experiences?
- Am I still correcting students according to their preferences and making sure to take an active role in guiding their spoken expression?
- Am I continuing to offer enough new learning content such as vocabulary, grammar structures and idioms, based on the student’s needs?
- Am I still giving targeted and personalized feedback in every session?
- Am I keeping the momentum going by tweaking learning plans and next steps as the student progresses?
And as you then check in with your students here some questions you could consider asking to understand if you’re meeting their expectations:
- Are they finding the sessions useful and aligned with their goals?
- Are they feeling a sense of progression?
- Are they happy with the balance of speaking, feedback, and new input in classes? Do they want more or less?
- How is their self-study outside the classroom going?
- Have their learning preferences or priorities changed in any way since your last check-in?
- Are they still enjoying the style and materials?
Staying proactive and checking in regularly not only shows professionalism, but also helps you adapt your approach to keep sessions fresh, relevant, and high-value. That’s what keeps students coming back and what sets a Pro tutor apart.
