Positive rating
A positive rating is defined as any rating 4 stars or above. This percentage is calculated from the last 200 reviews on Cambly. New tutors may not see a rating here until they've met with enough students to calculate a reliable average. Here are 3 pro tips to help you grow and learn as a tutor:
1. Understand and cater to your students’ needs
On Cambly, you will encounter a diverse range of learners who have different interests, levels and goals. We encourage you to take time to ask each learner what their goals are in their English journey, so that you foster a productive learning environment and help them reach those goals. For example:
- What English (or personal) goals do you have set for yourself?
- What would you like to focus on improving?
- What kind of lesson are you looking for? (for example: conversational, grammar focused, test prep, business, etc.)
Asking questions like these will help you personalize the lesson so you can cater to each learner’s needs.
Some learners may be just beginning their English journey and not be able to articulate their goals just yet. As the tutor, you can make observations and offer suggestions to the student during your lessons to help them identify their goals. For example:
You have a strong foundation of grammar and know a lot of vocabulary, great! I think we can work on building your confidence and improving your fluency. Would you like to work on more conversational practice in our next lesson?
Students will really appreciate your help identifying individual goals and helping them meet those goals.
2. Give and ask for feedback
You may encounter learners who are nervous upon entering the classroom! Giving feedback and offering lots of encouragement can help establish a welcoming environment. You can ask your learner at the beginning of the lesson how they prefer their corrections: after every mistake, only after serious mistakes, or at the end of class. This will allow you to provide corrections in a comfortable setting for the student.
Furthermore, providing feedback for students throughout the lesson, such as acknowledging achievements and suggesting areas for improvement, enhances the learning experience. For example: “Great job with your verb tenses today! Maybe in the next lesson, we can practice using phrasal verbs.” You can do this throughout the lesson using the in-class feedback tool, or follow up with the student after the lesson.
3. Message students before and after lessons
Messaging a student before and after a lesson is a great tactic in making a student feel valued. If you have an upcoming lesson with a new student, you can send a message to them letting them know you are looking forward to your upcoming lesson, or ask them if there’s anything they’d like to work on in the lesson. After your lesson, you can message them to let them know you enjoyed the lesson, leave feedback and words of encouragement, or send your schedule link to encourage them to book another lesson with you. Many successful tutors have found that proactively communicating with students has helped build rapport.

Attendance
Attendance represents the percentage of scheduled lessons you have attended during the current month. Your attendance will reset on the first of each month. Missing lessons, canceling without sufficient notice, and joining the classroom late can all adversely affect your attendance statistics. Here are some pro tips:
1. Communicate with your student
We completely understand when even tutors with the best attendance miss lessons sometimes due to things that are out of their control. Sending a message can go a long way. While we highly encourage canceling lessons at least 12 hours in advance and beginning all lessons on time, if you need to cancel a lesson with your student or are going to be late, taking time to send them a message to let them know will help avoid any misunderstandings.
2. Reschedule the lesson
Life is unpredictable and cancellations are inevitable. Many students bake their Cambly lessons into their busy schedules, so last-minute cancellations can affect their plans. In the event you need to cancel a lesson with your student, we recommend using the reschedule feature. This can show a student that you value your lesson with them and want to ensure you can still uphold it, even if it’s at a different time than the original lesson.
3. Communicate with Cambly (or Tutor Support)
We understand that emergencies happen, so we ask that you write in with any major circumstance that might have affected your ability to attend lessons. This will allow us to internally log your absence so that we can help you maintain good reliability stats and prevent a loss in your ability to tutor due to frequent no shows or late cancels.

Profile strength
⚠️ Notice a change in your tutor stats on your dashboard? The recent addition of new profile fields may have initially caused a decrease in your profile strength. Rest assured, once these new sections are filled out, your stats should return to their previous number. Read more in this article.
A friendly and comprehensive profile can help you attract students. This stat is based on the percentage of fields completed in your profile. This helps you understand the amount of information students have about you when searching for a tutor that best fits their needs. Here are 3 pro tips for creating an exceptional profile to attract students:
1. Create a profile that stands out
Your tutor profile is how you market yourself to potential students and we recommend creating one that makes you stand out. Aside from your basic information, your profile is a place to promote your experience, share your unique interests and hobbies, and offer anything that would make a student say “Wow! I want to book a lesson with this tutor!”
2. Add Cambly Courses to your profile
Cambly Courses are structured English lessons that empower tutors to teach great, pre-prepared lessons without needing to do lesson prep. Courses are optional for students and allow them to choose between having conversation-style lessons or covering prepared lessons.
If you feel confident and comfortable in teaching a course from the Cambly Library, you can add the course to "My Courses." Cambly will promote you to students enrolled in these courses.
3. Make a catchy introduction video
A tutor’s introduction video is one of the first things students view when searching for the right tutor, so we suggest utilizing it to showcase your personality. Use the 1-3 minutes to give a few fun facts about yourself, share what experience you have, and tease what a lesson with you might look like. Speaking clearly, smiling and looking at the camera are a few successful ways to make your profile video top tier. Having a friendly introduction video is one of the top ways successful tutors have attracted more students.

Repeat Learners
A repeat learner is any student who has completed three or more lessons with you. This stat, displayed on your dashboard, shows the number of repeat learners you've had in the current month. At the start of each month, the repeat learner stat resets to 0 and will update once you’ve completed three lessons with a student that month.
Students who meet with the same tutor report a better overall learning experience on Cambly, feeling more comfortable, more supported and more motivated to learn. Tutors who have more repeat learners also tend to report higher overall satisfaction with their experience on Cambly.
Additionally, our data shows that tutors with a higher number of repeat learners typically experience fuller schedules and priority hours, increased booked minutes, and, as a result, higher earnings on Cambly. Find tips on building your repeat learners below:
1. Add consistent availability
We know that every tutor has a different schedule and not everyone keeps the same schedule on Cambly each week, and that’s ok! When possible, adding consistent availability can help build your base of repeat learners, even if it’s just one slot a week. Being able to keep a lesson with you at the same day and time each week can help increase a learner’s ability to rebook with you.
2. Provide feedback
What makes learning on Cambly special is the ability to engage with a real-life tutor and receive personalized feedback in real time. Additionally, students have reported this is one of the things they want most during their English learning journey. You can utilize the built-in feedback tool to offer written feedback to your student during or after the lesson, or offer verbal feedback and encouragement to your student throughout the duration of the lesson.
3. Have a niche
Having something that sets you apart from other tutors will help you build up your repeat learners. Having a niche can help in attracting certain students to book lessons with you. If you have experience in a specific area (exam prep, business English, kids, grammar, etc.), you can showcase this specialty on your Tutor Profile.
