Direct deposit via Stripe
Direct deposit via Stripe is one of Cambly’s two payment options for tutors. Through Stripe, you are able to receive your payments directly into your bank account, completely free of processing fees.
What is Stripe?
Stripe is a company that helps businesses manage online payments. When we say we're partnering with Stripe, it means we're using their secure technology to manage the payments to our tutors: They act as a bridge between Cambly and your bank. It's like having a reliable assistant who takes care of moving money from one place to another, ensuring you get paid safely and on time.
Through Stripe, you are able to receive your payments directly into your bank account, completely free of processing fees. While FX fees still apply for payments to non-US banks, these FX fees have been reduced from 3% (Tipalti) and 4% (PayPal) to 1.5% with Stripe.
Please note: Stripe is unable to send a USD payment to a non-US bank account, even if your account is in USD. The only exception to this is if your bank provides you with US account information, including a US account number and a US routing number.
In most cases, if your bank account is in another country and you would like to receive your pay in USD, it is best to look into using an alternative global transfer platform such as Wise, Revolut, Payoneer etc. More details can be found here.
Setting up Stripe
It is imperative that you input your banking information correctly when setting up your account. Please carefully double check your banking information. Incorrect banking information will cause a delay in receiving your payment.
Steps to set up Stripe as your payment method
1. Log into your tutor account
2. Go to your account settings
3. Scroll down to your Payments section, and under Platform, click edit.
4. Select Stripe as your payment platform
5. Choose between US bank account or non-US bank account
6. Click "Save" to save your changes, then click the “Continue sign up” button
7. Stripe will open in a new tab to allow you to continue the process of setting up your new payment method
Already have a Stripe account? After inputting your basic information, if you are able to link your current Stripe account with your new Stripe account, you will be prompted to link the accounts as part of your initial signup flow. Please note: not all Stripe accounts allow linking to one another. Whether or not you can link an existing Stripe account depends on the type of account that you already have with Stripe.
Note: You can change the language at any time in the bottom, left-hand corner of the Stripe page.
8. When you get to the first screen, select “Individual” as your business, as indicated below.
9. Once you’ve selected “Individual”, complete the subsequent account set-up screens. Once you’ve completed entering your information, you should be all set up to receive your next payment through Stripe!
Note: You can simply copy and paste your Cambly profile URL for the “Your website” section.

Payment timelines
Stripe's processing times are listed as up to 3 days for US payments and up to 7 days for non-US payments. However, early adoption with Cambly has shown that US accounts typically receive their payments within 1 business day and non-US accounts within 2 business days. Cambly will send you an email when your payment has been sent. US holidays may cause delays in processing times.
Please note: If you opt to use an alternative global transfer account, such as Wise, processing times could take longer, up to 4 days, as described in their help center.
Processing and foreign exchange fees
With Stripe, you'll receive your payments directly into your bank account, completely free of processing fees. While foreign exchange (FX) fees still apply for any payment to a non-US bank, FX fees have been reduced from 4% (Paypal) to 1.5% with Stripe. Current market exchange rates still apply.
Notice a difference between the amount in your pay history and the amount in your payment confirmation email? (non-US banks)
The amount shown in your payment confirmation email is your total earnings from Cambly minus a 1.5% foreign exchange fee. If you receive the payment in your bank account in a currency other than USD, the amount may look different because it's then converted into your local currency based on the current market exchange rate. You can this site to help calculate your foreign exchange fee.
Connecting alternative global transfer accounts (Wise, Revolut, Payoneer, etc.)
Some tutors have found bank account alternatives to receive payments, such as Wise, Revolut, and Payoneer. Tutors have found success by simply googling their location alongside these names to learn if they are viable options for their locations and, if so, how to connect them for Stripe payments.
To connect a global transfer account, you simply need to input the account details associated with the currency in which you'd like to receive your payment.
How do I set up a global transfer account (such as Wise) with Stripe?
This process can vary based on which global transfer account you use, and we are unable to support in finding your account details for your individual account. For additional support with your personal accounts such as Wise, you will need to visit the Wise Help Center or contact their support. Cambly is not affiliated with these global transfer accounts.
Below is an example of one way to find Wise account information in 3 easy steps.
1. Click the account/currency of your choice
Whether you set this up through Stripe as a US or non-US account depends on which of your Wise banking information you wish to input
If this tutor wishes to be paid into their USD account, they would select a US account when setting up Stripe and use their USD Wise account info.
If they wish to be paid into their GBP account, they would select a non-US account while setting up Stripe and use their GBP Wise account info.
Selecting the currency tile will open up that account. In this example USD was selected.
2. Select Receive
3. Selecting Receive will open up another window, where you can find your account details. Use these details to set up your account with Stripe.
Please note: If you opt to use an alternative global transfer account, such as Wise, processing times could take longer, up to 4 days, as described in their help center.
PayPal
PayPal is the other payment option for Cambly tutors. With paypal as your selected payment method, your Cambly payment is sent directly to your PayPal account.
Steps to set up PayPal
1. Log into your tutor account
2. Go to your account settings
3. Scroll down to your Payments section, and under Platform, click edit.
4. Select PayPal as your payment platform
5. Be sure to click "Save" once you've selected PayPal.
5. Enter your PayPal email and be sure to verify it. You should receive a separate email to verify your PayPal email address.
FAQs
Stripe
What are my payment options when using Stripe?
Stripe processes payments directly to a bank account. For non-US bank accounts, Stripe converts the money to the currency to your local bank based on current market exchange rates. All payments made to a non-US bank account, regardless of currency, are subject to the 1.5% foreign exchange (FX) fee.
Why is Stripe asking me for additional identification/verification information?
Stripe offers a unique onboarding process which allows users to get started right away. However, they also have to make sure any accounts that work with them are both abiding by their Services Agreement and also complying with any laws that may apply. So at times, they may request additional account verification information.
If you have a US account, you may be requested to provide a social security number. However, if you are a non-US individual, you will not have a social security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN). If this is the case, Stripe has advised to use the last 4 digits of a form of ID and upload a photo. This can be a passport, ID card, or any other official photographic ID.
Please note: It may take a few minutes to be prompted to upload a photo ID in response to the numbers you enter. If you are not prompted immediately to upload a photo coordinated with the numbers you enter, it only takes a few minutes, and you will be prompted to do so shortly after.
Will I still be able to choose a different pay frequency with Stripe?
Yes, you can still choose your pay frequency with Stripe.
I already have a Stripe account. How do I link my Cambly payments to that one?
Whether or not you can link an existing Stripe account depends on the type of account that you already have with Stripe, as not all Stripe accounts allow linking to one another. If you are able to link your accounts, upon setting up your Stripe account with Cambly you will be prompted to link the accounts as part of your initial signup flow without needing to take any special action. The connection is based on the personal information you submit, such as your phone number.
Why is the payment I received via Stripe less than what my email from Cambly says?
The amount shown in your payment confirmation email is your total earnings from Cambly minus a 1.5% foreign exchange fee. If you receive the payment in your bank account in a currency other than USD, the amount may look different because it's then converted into your local currency based on the current market exchange rate.
Do I need to create an account directly through Stripe?

Non-US payments
What is a 'Foreign exchange (FX)' fee? What is does 'current market exchange rate' mean?
For payments to a non-US bank, a 1.5% foreign exchange (FX) fee will apply. This amount is deducted when your payment is processed and the updated total is shown in your payment email. If your payment needs to be converted into a different currency, the conversion is done based on the current market exchange rate at the time of the currency exchange.
How can I tell what the market exchange rate was at the time of my transfer?
To find the current market exchange rate that was applied to your payment, simply divide the payment amount detailed in your payment email by the amount received in your nominated account.
Here is an example for a Cambly payment of $100 USD to a non-US bank:
The amount shown in your payment confirmation email will be $98.50 (1.5% FX fee deducted)
The payment into your nominated account arrives as 91.70 EUR
Divide 91.70 / 98.50 = 0.93 or 1 USD = 0.93096 EUR
How can I view the exchange rate in my Stripe account?
You can view the exchange rates in your Stripe account by following these steps:
- Go to your account settings
- Click View/Update Stripe account
3. Click "Transactions" on the left side of your screen
4. Click on the transaction you'd like to view
5. You can then view the exchange rate
