Switching from PayPal? Start here
PayPal fees begin July 14, 2026, and PayPal will no longer be available after November 11, 2026.
- You don't need to create a separate Stripe account. Don't sign up on Stripe's website. It's all done inside your Cambly account settings (Payments → edit icon), and Cambly connects you to Stripe automatically.
- Stripe payouts aren't instant like PayPal. Payments take up to 3 business days (US bank account) or up to 7 business days (non-US) to arrive in your bank account after being sent, though many tutors report much faster times. Public holidays, both in the US and in your local banking country, may cause delays in processing times.
- Yes, you can use Wise, Payoneer, or Revolut. Many tutors receive payments into a USD account through these platforms, which is fee-free with Stripe Connect. You'll just need a US account and routing number, and you must select United States as your bank account country when setting it up.
Everything you need to know about switching to Stripe, including a detailed step-by-step guide, is below.

What are my payment options?
Our mission is to provide tutors with the most reliable and hassle-free payment solution. Cambly has three payment options available to both US and non-US tutors. Available payment options may vary depending on your location.
- Direct deposit via Stripe Connect
- Direct deposit via Stripe Global Payouts
- PayPal
⚠️ Action required: PayPal is going away on November 11, 2026. To continue receiving payments without interruption, you must switch to Stripe Connect or Stripe Global Payouts before this date.
What is Stripe?
Stripe is a secure, dependable payments partner trusted by businesses worldwide. Stripe acts as a bridge between Cambly and your bank, like a reliable assistant that takes care of moving money from one place to another, ensuring you get paid securely and on time.
What is the difference between Stripe Connect and Stripe Global Payouts?
Both options send your payments as a direct deposit to your bank account, but they differ in fee structure, so one may be a better fit for you depending on your location.
- Stripe Connect is the existing Stripe payment method that tutors currently use through Cambly.
- Stripe Global Payouts is a newer option that has recently become available, and may offer more favorable fees for tutors in certain locations.
When you set up or update your payment method, you'll be shown a comparison of the available options based on your country and expected earnings, so you can easily choose the one that works best for you.
Note: Stripe is unable to send a USD payment to a non-US bank account, even if your account is in USD. The only exception to this is if your bank provides you with US account information, including a US account number and a US routing number.
Many alternative global transfer platforms such as Wise, Revolut, and Payoneer provide this option. If you have a US account and routing number, you should select US as your bank account country.
How to select your payment method
- Log into your tutor account.
- Go to your account settings and scroll down to the Payments section.
-
Click the edit icon on the right. A "Setup payment method" window will appear.
💡 Haven't set up payments before? If this is your first time, you'll be asked to select your bank account country first. Once selected, you'll be taken to the comparison screen in the next step.
- You'll see a side-by-side comparison of the available payment methods. Enter your expected weekly earnings to see an estimated take-home amount for each option. Click "Show processor fees" for a detailed view of the fees.
💡 Not seeing all three payment options? The available payment methods may vary depending on your location. In some locations, there may be only one option available.
- Select the payment method that works best for you. If you are switching to a new payment method, follow the steps below to set up your payment method.
Setting up your chosen payment method
⚠️ Make sure your banking/PayPal account information is entered correctly, as incorrect details can cause a delay in receiving your payment.
If you select Stripe Global Payouts
Click Connect with Stripe, and you'll be taken to a screen where you can enter your personal details and bank account information.
Once you have completed your personal details and entered your bank account information, click Confirm and you're all set.
💡 Please note: With Stripe Global Payouts, your payment is sent directly from Cambly to your bank account. Unlike Stripe Connect, you do not have a Stripe account dashboard, and your payments will not appear in a Stripe account. Your pay history will show "Sent to linked bank account" to confirm that your payment has been sent.
If you select Stripe Connect
Click Connect with Stripe, and Stripe will open in a new tab where you can continue the process of setting up your payment method.
💡 Note: You can change the language at any time in the bottom left-hand corner of the Stripe page.
When you get to the first screen, select "Individual" as your business type.
Once you've selected "Individual", complete the subsequent account set-up screens. What you see on these screens may vary depending on your bank account country, but you will generally be asked to provide your name, bank account details, and in some cases an address.
If you are asked for your website URL, you can simply copy and paste your Cambly profile URL.
Once you've completed entering all of your details, you will be prompted to review and submit your information.
💡 Please note: If your Stripe Connect account becomes inactive — meaning it hasn't received a payment in 30 days and isn't your current payment method — it may be deleted. A banner on your Pay History page will notify you if this applies to you.
If your account is deleted and you'd like to use Stripe Connect again in the future, you'll need to go through the setup process again.
If you select PayPal
Enter your PayPal email address as shown below.
Payment method update notifications
For your security, whenever your payment method is updated, you will automatically receive a notification email to the email address registered with your Cambly account.
⚠️ If you receive this email and have not made any changes to your payment method, please follow the instructions in the email and contact us immediately.
Processing and foreign exchange fees
Payment fees vary depending on your payment method and location. Here is a summary of the fees for each option:
Stripe Connect

- Non-US bank account: 1% foreign exchange (FX) fee + a processing fee that varies depending on your country
Stripe Global Payouts

- Non-US bank account: $1 processing fee + a small percentage that varies depending on your location + 1% foreign exchange (FX) fee
PayPal

The Setup payment method screen provides a full breakdown of expected fees for your specific location. Simply enter your expected weekly earnings to see a side-by-side comparison of your estimated take-home amount for each payment option. Click Show processor fees for a detailed view.
Payment processing times
Stripe's processing times are up to 3 business days for US bank accounts and up to 7 business days for non-US bank accounts. In many cases, payments arrive faster than this. Please note that public holidays, both in the US and in your local banking country, may cause delays in processing times.
You will receive an email from Cambly informing you when your payment has been sent. You may also receive an email from Stripe.

Can I switch payment methods after I've already set one up?
Yes, you can switch your payment method at any time. Simply go to your account settings, scroll down to the Payments section, and click the edit icon to select a new payment method.
Will I still be able to choose a different pay frequency with Stripe?

Will my choice of payment method affect how my income is reported for tax purposes?
Tax reporting is based on the tax information you provide in your tutor profile, not on where your payments are sent. Your choice of payment method and bank account won't affect how or where Cambly reports your income.
For more information on how Cambly handles taxes, see Filing Taxes and Reporting Income.
Stripe Global Payouts and Stripe Connect
Do I need to create an account directly through Stripe?
This depends on which Stripe payment method you have selected. If you have selected Stripe Connect, a new tab will open for you to complete your account setup with Stripe directly. If you have selected Stripe Global Payouts, you simply enter your bank account details on screen and no account set up is required.
Can I receive my pay to a global money transfer account (Wise, Revolut, Payoneer) with Stripe?
Yes! You are able to receive payments into accounts such as Wise, Payoneer, and Revolut with both Stripe Connect and Stripe Global Payouts. If you have been issued US account details (including a US routing number and account number), make sure to select United States as your bank account country when setting up your payment method if you wish to receive your pay in USD.
Why is the payment I received via Stripe less than what is shown in my Pay History?
The amount you receive via Stripe is your total earnings from Cambly after any applicable fees have been deducted. If you receive your payment in a currency other than USD, the amount may look different as it will be converted into your local currency based on the current market exchange rate at the time of the transaction.
Why is Stripe asking me for additional identification/verification information?
Stripe may at times request additional identification or verification information to ensure compliance with their Services Agreement and applicable laws.
If you have a US account, you may be asked to provide a social security number. If you are not a US resident and do not have a social security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN), Stripe has advised using the last 4 digits of an official photo ID such as a passport or ID card, along with a photo upload.
💡 Note: If you are not immediately prompted to upload a photo ID after entering your details, please allow a few minutes, you will be prompted to do so shortly after.
Stripe is asking for a social security number but I'm not a US resident. What should I do?
For non-US residents, Stripe has advised using the last 4 digits of an official photo ID such as a passport or ID card, along with a photo upload. If you encounter any issues with this, please submit a ticket to Tutor Support.
I have a Thai bank and am getting an error. What should I do?
Tutors who have a Thai bank account should ignore the instructions "Thai nationals must use Thai script." Because your bank account name is in English, please also enter your name in English when setting up your bank account with Stripe.
Stripe Connect
What happens if my Stripe Connect account is inactive?
If your Stripe Connect account is inactive — meaning it has not received a payment for 30 days and is not your current payment method — it may be deleted. A banner on your Pay History page will notify you before this happens.
If your account is deleted and you'd like to use Stripe Connect again in the future, you'll need to go through the setup process again.
I already have a Stripe account. How do I link my Cambly payments to that one?
This applies to tutors setting up Stripe Connect as their payment method. Whether or not you can link an existing Stripe account depends on the type of account you already have with Stripe, as not all Stripe accounts allow linking to one another. If you are able to link your accounts, you will be prompted to do so automatically as part of the Stripe Connect setup flow, based on the personal information you submit, such as your phone number.
How can I access the Stripe app?
This applies if you use Stripe Connect as your payment method. You can follow the directions on this page to download the Stripe app on your mobile device.
Stripe Global Payouts
What happens to my existing Stripe Connect account if I switch to Stripe Global Payouts?
Your Stripe Connect account will remain in the system unless you delete it, meaning you can switch back to Stripe Connect at any time.
I've switched from Stripe Connect to Stripe Global Payouts. How do I access my Stripe account?
With Stripe Global Payouts, you do not have a Stripe account to log into. Unlike Stripe Connect, where payments are sent to your Stripe account first and then transferred to your bank, Stripe Global Payouts sends your payment directly from Cambly to your bank account.
You may notice that your pay history shows "Sent to linked bank account" rather than "Sent to Stripe". This is expected and simply confirms that your payment has been sent directly to your bank.
I switched to Stripe Global Payouts but my payment doesn't appear in my Stripe account. Is this normal?
Yes, this is completely normal. With Stripe Global Payouts, your payment is sent directly from Cambly to your bank account and will not appear in your Stripe account dashboard. This is different from Stripe Connect, where payments are first sent to your Stripe account before being transferred to your bank.
Non-US payments
What is a 'Foreign exchange (FX)' fee?
For payments to a non-US bank account, a foreign exchange (FX) fee will apply. This amount is deducted when your payment is processed.
How can I tell what the market exchange rate was at the time of my transfer?
If your payment needs to be converted into a different currency, the conversion is done based on the current market exchange rate at the time of the transaction, as determined by the payment provider.
To determine the market exchange rate used for your payment, divide the USD payment amount by the amount deposited into your account in your local currency. This calculation will give you the applied rate.
