How is my rating calculated?
After every session, we ask students to rate their tutor on a scale of 1 to 5. Your rating is an average of the last 200 ratings that you have received on Cambly, filtering unfair ratings. The current average tutor rating on Cambly is a 4.8 / 5.0. Ratings are updated once a week, so no single student's rating should impact your overall rating. Changes in your rating are influenced by the new ratings received from students in the previous week.
Please note that not all sessions will contribute to your overall ratings. Below are situations where ratings will not be counted toward your overall rating:
- Ratings left by free trial students
- Ratings from a lesson with connection issues
- Ratings from lessons less than a few minutes in length
- Ratings from Group Lessons Beta
- Ratings from lessons where a tutor uses the "return lesson" option
What if I get an unfair rating?
We do extensive filtering in order to minimize unfair ratings. A tutor's rating is an average of the last 200 ratings they received, so a few unfair ratings has very little impact on the overall rating. In fact, over time, a tutor's rating should be representative of the tutor's ability to impress students.
Can I get feedback on why my rating dropped or increased?
Currently, tutors won't be able to see students' feedback. We understand that having student feedback could help even the most experienced tutors to improve. We are working to develop a system to provide student feedback back to tutors.
How does my rating impact my Cambly experience?
Tutors with higher ratings receive higher Priority Hour access (up to 3 weeks). In addition, students often choose their tutor based on the tutors' experience and overall ratings.
How can I improve my ratings?
The best way to improve your ratings is to try your best to impress your students. Some methods that have been successful for top tutors are: focusing the session on the student's specific needs, coming prepared with a library full of great content, giving many corrections, maintaining a friendly and encouraging atmosphere, etc. If your students believe that you are helping them, not only will they rate you highly, they will also request to chat with you again. Check the Tutor Guide for some Best Practice Videos from top tutors.

New Talent
If you're still fairly new to Cambly, you may notice that your profile is tagged as "New Talent" to students, as we found that the average rating is not representative until a tutor works beyond ~40 hours. We remove the "New Talent" tag after you have accumulated enough ratings to have a reliably accurate average that we can show to students.
Ratings from students with weak internet connections or from students who chatted for less than a minute will not be factored into your rating.
