Building Your Base of Regular Students
The most successful Cambly tutors build a foundation of regular students who book with them consistently over time. Regular students provide scheduling stability, deeper learning relationships, and more predictable income.
Student Interest Notifications
When a student on Cambly shows interest in your profile, you'll receive a Student Interest Notification. These notifications appear when a student has:
- Viewed your profile: They've checked out what you have to offer
- Added you to their favorites: You've made a great impression
- Watched your intro video: They like your style
This gives you the opportunity to take initiative and connect with students who are already interested. Here's what you can do:
- Initiate a Conversation: Send a friendly message introducing yourself, asking about their learning goals, or simply saying hello. It's a great way to start building rapport.
- Propose a Lesson: If you see a student who seems like a perfect fit, you can directly propose a lesson time. This is a quick way to get a session booked.

Using "My Regulars"
As you meet students you enjoy working with, add them to your "My Regulars" list. This organizational tool helps you keep track of and easily access students you work with consistently.
How to add a student as a regular:
- Click on their name in either the History or Messages page, then toggle "Regular Student"
- View all your regular students on your History page under the "My Regulars" column
Benefits of using My Regulars:
- Quick access to student profiles you work with frequently
- Ability to open reservation availability specifically for regular students only
- Easy way to propose lesson times directly to specific students
- Build consistent weekly schedules with students you know well
When to add someone as a regular:
- After 2-3 positive lessons together
- When a student books a second lesson with you
- When you've established good rapport and the student indicates they want to continue
Proposing Reservations to Regular Students
Once you've established rapport with a student, you can proactively propose lesson times rather than waiting for them to book.
To propose a single lesson:
- Click "Schedule private lesson" on your Reservations page (or click directly on your calendar)
- Select your student from the dropdown menu
- Select the lesson day, start time, and length
- Click "Send Invite"
The student will receive an email to either confirm or deny the reservation. You can message them via chat to remind them to respond.
To propose recurring weekly lessons: For students who book regularly at the same time, you can propose repeating lessons:
- Follow the same steps as above, but check the "Repeats weekly" box
- The end date defaults to six months out (or your student's subscription end date, whichever comes first)
- You can edit the end date up to one year out or the student's subscription end date
Once your student confirms, all lessons will appear on your calendar. Any dates with student conflicts will be noted in the confirmation email.
Best practices for proposing reservations:
- Wait until you've had at least one successful lesson before proposing
- Mention the proposed lesson in a message so they know to check their email
- Start with single lessons before proposing recurring ones
- Confirm the student's preferred schedule before proposing weekly lessons
Following Up After Lessons
Building regulars starts with making students want to come back. After a good first lesson, send a follow-up message:
What makes an effective follow-up:
- Show you genuinely enjoyed the lesson
- Reference something specific from your conversation
- Encourage them to book again
- Include a link to your schedule
Example messages:
- "Hello [name]! I really enjoyed chatting with you today. I've made you a 'regular student' so you can view my availability. I usually update my schedule every week. Please let me know if you have any questions and I hope to chat again sometime soon!"
- "Hi [name]! It was great meeting and chatting with you today. I am going to send you some links to websites that have listening practice. [Share your schedule link] Feel free to book another lesson anytime!"
You can share your schedule by clicking "share schedule" in the message box with the student.
Badges & Testimonials
Beyond your intro video and profile information, badges and testimonials help your profile stand out to potential students.
The Badge System - Badges appear on your profile to highlight your teaching strengths. Students can award you compliments after rebooking lessons, and these compliments contribute to earning badges. Earned badges automatically appear on your profile.
Testimonials - After you've had three or more positively rated lessons with a student, they're invited to write a review of their experience with you. These reviews can be featured as testimonials on your profile. Choose ones that best represent your teaching strengths and the types of students you want to attract.
Pro Tips for Building Your Regular Base
- Be consistent with your schedule: Students are more likely to rebook if they know when you're available
- Use weekly availability templates: Makes it easy for students to find you at the same times
- Send feedback after lessons: Use the feedback tool to reinforce learning and show you're invested
- Create regulars-only availability: Once you have several regulars, dedicate some slots just for them to ensure they can book with you
-
Track your regulars' goals: Review lesson summaries before each session to show continuity and progress.
