Twice a year, regions with Daylight Savings Time (DST) change their clocks by one hour. This can be confusing, but managing it on Cambly is simpler than it looks!
The General Rule: One-Off Lessons & Priority Hours
For most lessons, you don't need to do anything! Cambly's system automatically makes these changes for you on the system.
You do not need to take any manual action for your one-off lessons or Priority Hours.
On the day the time change takes effect, your calendar may appear slightly different, and the times shown along the edge of the calendar may not align with the times displayed inside reservation boxes. If this occurs, please note that the times shown inside the reservation boxes are always accurate.
Also, if you're in the habit of proposing reservations for regulars and they're in a time zone with different DST changes to your time zone, you'll need to be aware that the same time for you will be one hour different for them after the change.
The One Exception: Repeating Lessons
By default, the system is designed to keep your time consistent for repeating lessons, which means the time of the lesson for your student will change (unless they are also in a timezone with the same DST change).
Example:
- You have a repeating lesson at 8:00am.
- Your student is in a non-DST zone, and their time for the lesson is 2:00pm.
- When your timezone moves forward for DST, your repeating 8:00am lesson will remain at 8:00am for you, but will now be at 3:00pm for the student.
If you’d like the lesson time to remain the same for your student, you can cancel the existing repeating lessons that take place after DST change, and create new ones, adjusting the time on your end as needed.
How to know whether to add or take an hour to keep the lesson time the same for the student?
If you are entering DST (springing forward) subtract 1 hour from the reservation time.
If you are leaving DST (falling back) add 1 hour to the reservation time.
Your Timezone Settings
While the system handles most changes, it relies on your settings being correct. Before any DST change, it's always good to double-check two things:
-
Your Cambly Profile: Go to your account settings and confirm your Location and Timezone are correct.
- Your Computer: Check that your computer's system clock and timezone are set to automatically update.
I am in a timezone without a DST change, but my repeating lessons times have changed. Why?
This occurs because repeating lessons are tied to the timezone in which they were originally created, not your current timezone.
For example, if you created a repeating lesson series while in New York (which observes daylight saving time) and later move to a location that does not, the lesson time may shift when New York enters or exits daylight saving time. This happens because repeating lessons are designed to stay aligned with the timezone they were originally set in.
To prevent this, we recommend clearing any repeating lessons when you change timezones, and re-proposing them from your new location.
